Free insurance for traffic enforcers: What you need to know

It can be tough to be a traffic enforcer in the Philippines.

After all, it’s not a joke to stand in the heat all day and deal with everything from road accidents to raging tempers to heavy pollution. One can even say that the inherent stress in the profession is a health hazard in itself. Indeed, traffic enforcers have to endure all of these for minimal pay—about Php 11,800 per month, or just Php 537 a day. Factoring in day-to-day expenses, it’s understandable why most of them would not have insurance on their minds or their list of priorities.

Fortunately, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the Philippine Insurers and Reinsurers Association, Inc. (PIRA), and the Philippine Insurers Club (PIC) recognize this — and have decided to take swift action.

In a memorandum of agreement signed during last October’s Insurance Consciousness Week, the insurance organizations formally began their collaborative effort with the MMDA to provide free non-life insurance coverage for all traffic enforcers in the metro.

The free group insurance policy will be issued by Fortune General Insurance Corporation.

The policy will include the following benefits for MMDA enforcers in the line of duty:

“With all these risks they encounter in the performance of their job, it is fitting for our MMDA enforcers to have such insurance program that will protect them and grant assurance to their loved ones in the event of unexpected death,” said Insurance Commissioner Dennis B. Funa in a public statement.
